Poem,"To my Retired Frend Wei" is one of later work by Du Fu, left side is original poem in Chinese, it is very orderliness, word number is same in every line, this is one of Chinese poem style, five-character quatrain. Poetry writes occasional juvenile familiar scenario, and describe the everything in life is uncertain, old friends meet is exceptionally warm.
This poem is one of the earliest poems developed in China during the ancient times. The use of such words as “turning grey at the temples” would suggest that it was indeed the ancient times since such temples were very common in the old days unlike at the present.
The poet used imagery to facilitate the communication of his idea since such a technique could make the poem lively and sounds to be real. The reader could probably imagine the two great friends meeting, conversing with the children and eventually taking some wine.
This poem is a narrative since it tends to explain certain activities and events that happened when some friends met. Furthermore, it describes the look of the sky at a clear night when the stars are visible. Nonetheless, the poet narrates that they have lost about a half of their friends since the nearly twenty years of isolation.
Du Fu used some simple words that are easily understandable and that make the poem flow smoothly. Moreover, the stanzas seem to complement each other and hence making the reader to continue reciting the poem. However, the lines of the poem are relatively long but broken down into shorter forms that introduce and explain each other. Moreover, the poet did not repeat its lines and thus encouraging a continuous flow of the poem. Therefore, Du Fu chose the most appropriate words for the poem.
The poet used a symbolic language that encourages brainstorming to determine the meaning of such a language. For instance, “to my retired friend Wei” could have been used to signify that the two friends had been separated for an extended period such that the other friend had even retired from work. Furthermore, the lines that clearly explain the long separation indicate that the two friends had taken a long time before seeing each other such that the other friend had even married and gotten grown up children.
The poet uses a serious tone that tends to explain the events as they unfold. However, the poet seems to explain the phenomena of other aspects of life. For example, the line that states “it is almost as hard for friends to meet as for the morning and the evening stars”. However, such a line also depicts the use of simile in comparing the two aspects. Therefore, the poet used simile to bring forth the various similarities between certain things in nature.
This poem has a friendship theme that is emphasized by the term “friend” as used severally in the poem. Furthermore, the various stanzas of the poem describe the relationship that was developed long time ago between the two friends. Moreover, the two persons are referring to each other as old friend.
