The great Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts on January 19, 1809. Growing up as a kid, Edgar never had a real loving relationship with his parents, who both were actors. His father abandoned his family, and his mother passed away when he was only 3 years old. Edgar Allan Poe was sent to live with the Allan family in Richmond, Virginia. Money was always a issue for Edgar as the Allan’s who had plenty of money, only gave Edgar 1/3 of whatever he needed. While he attended the University of Virginia in 1826 at age 17, he was unable to pay his schools tuition and relied on gambling to cover the expenses. This left Poe in debt which resulted in many hardships for the rest of his life. When he arrived to his home in Richmond, he was shocked with the news that his finance Elmira Royster had become engaged to another man while he was attending school. Although Poe was heartbroken and extremely poor, he never gave up on his quest to become the amazing poet he was destined to be.
In today’s era of writing, Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be the “Father of the Detective Stories” and an innovator of the science fiction genre. All of his works incorporated murder, mystery, imagination, and terror. Some of his best works have been published and printed since the early 1830’s including “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Fall of the House of Usher”. Poe’s most recognized poem “The Raven” was written in 1845. Poe’s reputation today primarily focuses on his tales of death and horror themed poetry. It’s quite ironic that Poe was recognized as great writer of mystery and yet his own death, at the age of 40 remains a mystery to the rest of the world.
