Jacques Roumain is a Haitian poet born on June 04, 1907 in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti. He was the first of eleven children born to Auguste Roumain and Emilie Auguste, whose father, Tancrede Auguste, held the Presidency of the Republic in 1912-1913. Jacques’ earlier years were spent in studies across the world. He studied all over the world like Belgium, Switzerland, France, Germany, and Spain. When he turned 20, he returned to Haiti and formed La Revue Indigne: Les Arts et La Vie with some other poets. During his time in Haiti, he was directly involved in opposing the United States, and in 1934 he gave birth to the Haitian Communist Party. His political activities caused him to be consistently arrested and eventually he was exiled from Haiti by President Stenio Vincent. Unfortunately, Roumain passed at the early age of 37 while only creating a couple of prominent works that were translated by other English poets.
